Utilities, engineers, students and researchers in the wastewater sector
This webinar series is organised by the IWA Climate Smart Utilities Initiative in partnership with DANVA.
With a focus on progress in the Nordic region, this webinar series has highlighted the principles for a climate-neutral water sector, demonstrating some of the Danish national monitoring programmes for nitrous oxide and methane emissions and concrete actions by utilities. Following an initial webinar on collaborative progress in the Nordic water sector, and two detailed webinars on methane and nitrous oxide, the final webinar of the series will shift from process emissions to planetary boundaries.
Drawing on a newly published paper from the Climate Smart Utilities GHG Monitoring Working Group, the last webinar will introduce the concept of life cycle analysis (LCA) and show how this is being included in leading water sector projects as part of multi-criteria, participatory decision making. The webinar will also explore linkages in LCA beyond climate, to consider all impacts on our biosphere, introducing the concept of planetary boundaries which underlines our role as stewards of catchments and all within – including both water and nutrient cycles.
Following this session, participants will be able to:
Towards a Climate Neutral Water Sector: the Nordic Experience
Monitoring and mitigating methane: Danish lessons for global action
Monitoring and mitigating nitrous oxide: Danish lessons for global action
Safe and just earth system boundaries and global and subglobal scale
The Planetary Boundaries framework
Quantifying and Modelling of Fugitive Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Urban Water Systems
